Here is perhaps the finest example of a BSA C10L you'll find in America!
This 1954 BSA C10L is a 250cc sidevalve, 4-speed, in a plunger frame. A full, professional restoration was carried out by the previous owner several years ago with emphasis on originality and correctness. The frame and fittings were powder-coated, and black sheet metal parts were painted. Original hardware and fasteners were re-used where practical and cadmium plated as original. The fuel tank was cleaned, coated inside and painted in Marine Blue, and the wheel centres painted and hand-lined to match the tank, as was original. All chrome parts were replated except for the fuel tank. A new, correct Lycette solo seat was fitted and the original Smiths Chronometric speedometer serviced and re-set to zero. I put the 8 miles on it!
This amazingly original machine retains its factory-fitted handlebar with welded-on lever perches, original Amal twistgrip, original Amal rubber grips, original Lucas switches and Lucas ignition key, original Smiths Chronometric speedometer and odometer, both of which operate properly. Lights, horn, charging system all function properly.
When I acquired the BSA, is hadn’t been started post-restoration, used instead for static display. I fitted a new, modern sealed 6-volt battery inside a reproduction rubber Lucas dummy battery, and serviced the machine with fresh fluids. When started and ridden a few miles, the rebuilt engine weeped some oil from standing unstarted for so long. I had the engine and gearbox removed, dismantled and resealed with fresh gaskets and seals, and new clutch friction plates while I was at it. The original Amal Type 274 25/32” carburettor with remote float chamber was also stripped and rebuilt.
A Podtronics ignition module replaced the faulty rectifier/voltage regulator under the seat. Fresh 3.00-19 Universal tyres are fitted front and rear.
Flaws include some dings and scratches on the fuel tank chrome panels and the blue paint is chipping in a couple places (under the fuel cap and at the forward fixing bolt flange). The original carburetor, while rebuilt, has some wear in its bore, lacks a choke slide and therefore doesn’t idle smoothly until warmed up. Re-sleeving the carb should remedy this. Still starts first kick from cold!
This BSA C10 is a little gem! It has a low seat height, is very compact and lightweight and a breeze to handle. It lifts easily onto its centre stand without causing a hernia. Starting is simple. Perfect for someone who wants a lightweight, classic machine. It’s certainly not a roadburner but it has adequate power to keep up with traffic and it shifts smoothly through its four gears. To be honest, it attracts more attention and smiles than my Gold Star Clubman! A real find for the BSA collector or British bike enthusiast in general.
